individual therapy

Hiwa provides short and long-term therapy to survivors of trauma and abuse in the Washington, DC area.

Therapy is provided through a trauma-informed lens; interventions from various theoretical frameworks like cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and narrative therapy are integrated to support the client. Sessions are currently held virtually through a HIPAA-compliant website.

examples of therapy goals:

  • Reduce the negative impact that trauma has had on various aspects of life;

  • Decrease attribution of blame to self as having caused or having responsibility for the abuse/assault;

  • Develop and implement effective coping skills to improve functioning and participate constructively in relationships;

  • Develop healthy cognitive patterns and beliefs that will lead to increased hopefulness and self-esteem.

Hiwa offers psychoeducational and psychosocial presentations and trainings. These are made available to community organizations for the benefit of resident/consumer participation or training opportunities for professionals.
